Boughton Park

The woodland at Boughton Park stretches across 200 acres of proper mature forest just outside Kettering, and it's the sort of place where you actually hear birdsong rather than yourself thinking. Ancient trees dominate the reserve - oak and ash mostly - with paths that wind through undercover deep enough that even on grey days it feels sheltered rather than gloomy.

It's a walker's reserve first and foremost. The trails are well-marked and range from gentle circuits to longer loops through the quieter sections. Spring brings bluebells that genuinely stop you mid-step, and autumn colours are solid without being showy. Birdwatchers come for the woodpeckers and nuthatches. Families with younger kids will manage an hour comfortably; older ones keen on nature might stretch to two or three.

The reserve doesn't have visitor facilities to speak of, so bring what you need. Parking is straightforward. It's free access, which is refreshing - no gates, no ticket booths, just you and the woodland.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Northfield Farm is barely four miles away - this makes an excellent morning or afternoon leg-stretch without feeling like a proper outing. It combines well with Kettering's town centre if weather turns, though frankly the forest works better on drizzly days than blue-sky ones. Not a destination in itself, but genuinely worth the short drive if you're in the area and want something real rather than manicured.
