Bothy Yard

The Bothy Yard sits on the edge of Castlewellan, a proper working space that feels more like someone's lived-in project than a polished tourist stop. It's the kind of place where you stumble across old farm equipment, salvaged materials, and creative reuse happening in real time - part salvage yard, part workshop, entirely unpretentious.

What you're actually looking at is a collection of reclaimed and restored bothies - traditional stone shelters - alongside various outbuildings and rural craft spaces. It's low-key enough that you won't spend hours here, but it's genuinely interesting if you're into rural heritage or sustainable building practices. Families with kids interested in how things work will find it more engaging than those after manicured attractions.

There's no formal admission that I'm aware of, though it's worth checking ahead as opening hours aren't fixed. Allow 45 minutes to an hour, longer if you strike up conversation with anyone working there - the folk tend to know their stuff. It works well as a half-hour detour while basing yourself at Pine Tree Hollow Glamping or Slieve Croob Camping, both within spitting distance and rated brilliantly by visitors.

Go if you're the type who finds old farm buildings and salvage operations oddly satisfying. Skip it if you need visitor facilities or slick interpretation panels. It's authentic, unglamorous, and very much of the Mourne region.
