Boscobel House

The Royal Oak at Boscobel is one of those stories that sticks with you - Charles II hiding in an actual tree after the Battle of Worcester in 1651, watching Parliamentarian soldiers search the grounds below. You can see the house where he sheltered, a modest timber-framed cottage that feels far too ordinary for harbouring a fugitive king.

The property tells two distinct tales. There's the house itself, a 17th-century dwelling that's been restored with period furnishings and rooms that walk you through what life actually looked like back then - no velvet ropes, just honest domestic spaces. Then there's the oak tree business, which is half history, half tourist attraction, if I'm honest. The current oak is a descendant of the original (that one was long ago dismantled by souvenir hunters), planted in the 1950s. It's pleasant enough, but don't expect your mind to be blown by a tree.

History buffs will find this genuinely absorbing - the escape narrative is properly gripping when you're standing in the rooms where it unfolded. Families with younger children might manage an hour, though there's not much hands-on stuff to keep them entertained. The grounds are pleasant for a stroll.

Oakland Holiday Park sits just 2.5 miles away, making this an easy afternoon detour if you're based there or at High Onn.
