Boroughbridge Marina

The marina sits on the River Ure just outside Thirsk, a proper working waterway rather than a manicured leisure destination. You'll see narrowboats moored alongside the water, anglers casting lines from the banks, and the odd canoe paddling past. It's the sort of place where you can actually watch people living on their boats rather than just viewing them from a distance.

This works best if you're already staying in the area - Riverside Meadows is only down the road and makes a good base for exploring North Yorkshire. The marina itself won't eat up your whole day. A walk along the towpath takes maybe forty minutes there and back, and it's flat, which means older walkers and families with young kids won't struggle. Bring binoculars if you're keen on birdwatching; the river attracts quite a bit of wildlife.

The appeal is straightforward: it's peaceful, free to wander, and gives you a genuine slice of rural Yorkshire life. You won't find gift shops or tearooms within spitting distance, so come prepared if you want a proper sit-down. The towpath is pleasant but unremarkable - it's the river itself and the sense of stepping away from the main tourist trail that makes it worth your time. If you're staying at Riverside Meadows and want somewhere to stretch your legs without getting in the car, this does the job well. Just don't expect drama or thrills.
