About Bookhurst Wood
It's a nature reserve, so it's managed but not manicured. There are paths that work well for families with older kids - not pram terrain, but nothing brutal either. You're looking at maybe an hour for a decent walk, two if you're the sort who stops to identify everything. The reserve appeals most to people who actually like trees, or who've dragged their children somewhere quiet to burn off energy that won't happen at the usual theme park.
The terrain varies enough to keep things interesting. Some stretches are surprisingly open, others properly dense. Bring binoculars if you know what you're doing with them; otherwise just listen. The woodland birds here are worth the trip alone if you're into that.
Free to explore, no gates or fees that I could find. Best avoided after heavy rain when it gets boggy - autumn and spring are ideal. It works brilliantly if you're based at Care Ashore Campsite or the Glamping Holiday nearby, both within a few miles. Either spot gives you a proper break from the outdoors sort of people that don't need adventure parks to have a decent day out. Just sensible shoes and a bit of time.
