Boltby Reservoir

Boltby Reservoir sits tucked into the North Yorkshire landscape between Thirsk and the Moors, and it's the sort of place you'll stumble upon rather than plan for. The water itself is calm and reflective, ringed by moorland that changes character with the seasons. Spend an hour walking the perimeter if the weather's decent, or settle on the bank with binoculars if you're serious about spotting wildfowl.

It's genuinely worth visiting if you're after a quiet break from the busier tourist draws around Helmsley and the central Moors. The walk is gentle enough for families, though very young children might find the distance dull - there's not much in the way of facilities, so come prepared. Walkers do well here, especially those tackling longer routes across the North York Moors themselves.

The main appeal is simplicity. There are no gift shops, no visitor centre, no queues. Just water, sky, and the sound of whatever birds have decided to stop by. That said, it's not remotely dramatic. If you're expecting postcard views, you'll leave disappointed. The reservoir is functional, pleasant, and utterly unspectacular.

There's free access to the walking areas, though I'd check locally about current conditions before heading out in wet weather. Hillside Caravan Park, a couple of miles toward Thirsk, makes a sensible base if you're planning a broader North Yorkshire holiday. Give yourself one or two hours here maximum - it's a lovely interlude rather than a day-long destination.
