Bolsover Castle

The first thing that hits you at Bolsover is the sheer drama of the place - a proper fortress rising from the Derbyshire landscape with views that stretch for miles. It's not some crumbling ruin either; this is a working castle with real rooms you can actually walk through, which makes a refreshing change from the usual 'stay behind the rope' experience.

You're looking at a 17th-century riding school and indoor arena that genuinely transports you back. The Little Castle - the older bit - is where you'll spend most of your time, poking around the chambers and enjoying the fact that there aren't crowds of school parties jostling for position. The terrace walk is worth doing properly; don't rush it.

History types will find plenty to chew on here. It's got the sort of architectural detail that rewards a slow wander - if you're into Jacobean design or just fancy understanding how English nobility actually lived when they weren't being photographed, it's instructive stuff. Kids will get a kick out of the fortress aspect, though anyone under ten might find the indoor bits a bit samey after an hour.

Being only a couple of miles from Chesterfield makes this a solid afternoon stop rather than a full day commitment. Pair it with Poolsbrook Country Park if you're based at the caravan sites - they're close enough that you could realistically do both without it feeling rushed.
