Bolesworth Castle

The first time I spotted Bolesworth Castle from the Chester side, I wasn't expecting much - a Victorian folly done up in mock-medieval stone, a bit of 19th-century theatricality sitting in the Cheshire countryside. But that's precisely why it works. Built in the 1820s as a statement piece for a local landowner, it's got genuine character rather than the weight of actual centuries pressing down on it.

You get proper views across the parkland from the grounds, and the castle itself photographs brilliantly if that matters to you. The structure is compact enough that you won't spend hours here, but it's the kind of spot that rewards a gentle wander, especially if the light's decent. Kids might find the sheer oddness of it engaging - a castle that isn't really a castle has a certain appeal.

What you can and can't access changes seasonally, so ring ahead or check before you go. The nearest town is Chester, which gives you context - this is proper commuter belt stuff now, but it hasn't lost its rural edges completely.

If you're staying at Manor Wood or Little Pig Glamping - both solid choices just down the road - Bolesworth makes a decent afternoon add-on rather than a destination in itself. Pitch & Canvas is closer still. Pair it with a walk or a proper meal in Chester town centre and you've got half a day sorted. Not essential, but if you're in the area and the weather cooperates, worth the drive.
