Bog Wood

Walking into Bog Wood near Dunfermline, you're stepping into proper Scottish woodland - the kind that feels older than the paths they've cut through it. This isn't a manicured forest park with visitor centres and ice cream vans. It's a genuine working forest where you can lose an hour or three wandering between the trees without bumping into crowds.

The woodland floor is soft underfoot, carpeted with moss and dead needles. There are marked trails threading through, though nothing that demands serious fitness - it's more meander than march. On a grey Fife day, which is most days, the light filters through the canopy in that particular way Scottish forests do, making everything feel a bit hushed and atmospheric.

This works best for walkers who actually enjoy forests rather than views from high points. Families with young kids will get a solid hour out of it before the novelty of trees wears thin. History buffs won't find much to sink their teeth into here - it's about the woodland itself, not what happened in it.
