Bog Nursery

You'll need to get your boots on properly for this one. Bog Nursery is a working forestry site in North Yorkshire, just outside Northallerton, where you can walk through native woodland and bog habitat that's been actively managed and restored. It's the sort of place where you might actually see what woodland management looks like rather than just wandering through trees.

The appeal here is genuine if you're into woodland ecology or fancy a quieter walk away from the usual forest trails. The bog sections are the real draw - that squelchy, open water habitat that feels properly wild and a bit different from your standard woodland. Bring waterproof boots though; it's not called Bog Nursery for decoration.

This works best for serious walkers and nature types rather than families after a casual afternoon out. You'll want to allow a couple of hours minimum to get anything from it, and frankly it's not the sort of spot where kids will stay engaged unless they're genuinely interested in wildlife and wetlands. Early morning or after rain brings out the best of it - the place has proper atmosphere then.

It's free to access and makes a solid addition to a North Yorkshire park holiday. Whorlton Pods is just down the road at just over two miles away, making it easy to add a morning walk before heading back for a coffee. Cote Ghyll Caravan Park is slightly further at five miles but equally convenient if you're based there. Neither park holiday would be worse for including this as a genuine woodland break.
