Bobbit's Hole

The name alone will get a laugh out of most visitors, and yes, it's a real place just east of Harwich. Bobbit's Hole is a tidal inlet on the Essex coast where the landscape drops away into a proper little ravine - all weathered cliffs and shingle beach, the sort of place that feels more dramatic than you'd expect from flat Essex.

Walkers get the most from this one. It's not a structured attraction with visitor facilities or entrance fees; it's a natural coastal feature you walk to and explore at your own pace. The actual hole is most impressive at low tide when you can scramble down and poke about the rocky outcrops. High tide transforms it into something altogether different - the water rises significantly and you're stuck viewing from above, so timing matters.

The cliff erosion here is constant and visible, which is both fascinating and slightly unsettling. Bring decent walking boots because the path down is steep and muddy more often than not. Most people allow an hour or so, though you could spend longer if you're patient with photography or geology.
