Bluebell Woods, Gorleston-on-Sea

Late April in Norfolk, and the woodland floor at Gorleston turns electric blue. Bluebell Woods is exactly what it says - a stretch of ancient woodland east of Great Yarmouth where bluebells put on their show each spring. You'll find carpets of them, proper dense drifts that make the whole place feel rather magical if you time it right.

It's a straightforward walk through quiet woodland, nothing strenuous, and the sort of place that rewards an early morning visit before other people arrive. Photographers will have a field day. Families with younger kids should manage it easily - there's no technical difficulty here, just trees, flowers, and good air. Expect to spend an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're taking photos or moving slowly.

The woods are free to access, which is brilliant. Spring is obviously the main draw, but even outside bluebell season the woodland path is pleasant enough for a casual wander.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Haven Hopton is closest at just over a mile away, followed by Broadland Sands and Haven Wild Duck - this makes a decent half-day excursion. It won't take all day, so you'd likely combine it with a trip into Great Yarmouth or another coastal activity. Don't expect anything other than woodland and flowers, but on a clear April morning when the bluebells are at their peak, it's exactly what you came for.
