Blomfield Wood

The woodland around Blomfield Wood, just outside Beccles, is proper East Anglian walking country - flat, quiet, and surprisingly absorbing once you're in among the trees. It's not dramatic scenery. There are no vistas or dramatic drops. What you get instead is the kind of place where you notice things: the way light filters through the canopy, the undergrowth changing as you move deeper in, occasional glimpses of wildlife if you're patient and quiet enough.

This works best for people who actually enjoy walking rather than ticking off famous viewpoints. Families with young kids will get restless after an hour or so, unless they're the type who like exploring at their own pace and hunting for woodland creatures. It's the sort of wood where a forester would feel at home, and where birdwatchers do genuinely decent work.

If you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Kessingland Beach or The Hollies nearby, Blomfield Wood makes a solid change of pace from the beaches and parks. A couple of hours here breaks up the holiday without eating a whole day. You could combine it with a walk into Beccles town itself - it's close enough that it works as a half-morning adventure rather than a major expedition.

Go when it's dry. Suffolk woodland mud has a reputation for being stubborn, and there's not much point squelching through unnecessarily. Early spring or autumn are decent bets, when the place feels properly active rather than sleeping or overheating.
