You'll walk straight into the 1890s at Blists Hill, a sprawling open-air museum just outside Coalbrookdale where Victorian life has been painstakingly reconstructed across 42 acres. Instead of glass cases and ropes, you're wandering actual streets lined with period buildings - a chemist's shop, a sweet factory, miners' cottages, a working printworks. Staff in costume go about their day as if you're not there, which sounds twee but actually works brilliantly.

It's genuinely engaging rather than theme-park obvious. The ironworks and foundry sections give real weight to why this part of Shropshire mattered so much during the Industrial Revolution. Kids don't flag here because there's always something to look at or fiddle with - the street performer demonstrations change, you can buy sweets wrapped the old way, watch craftspeople actually work. Most visitors spend a solid three to four hours and still don't see everything.

Historyheads will find the technical detail impressive, but families get the most out of it because the place doesn't require constant reading. Bring proper walking shoes - the site covers genuine ground and it's not flat. Nearby Irongorge Camping sits just 2 miles away, putting you ideally placed for an early start before the crowds arrive. Peak season weekends do get busy; midweek visits are far more pleasant. Worth a full day if you're in the Ironbridge Gorge area.
