Blickling Mausoleum

The mausoleum sits just east of Norwich, a rather grand stone structure that marks the final resting place of the Hobart family - Norfolk gentry who made their mark centuries back. It's the sort of place you stumble upon whilst exploring the broader Blickling estate, though honestly, it's worth a dedicated stop if you're into funerary architecture and local history.

What you're looking at is proper Victorian-era stonework, all solemn and imposing in the way these things tend to be. The mausoleum itself is compact enough that you won't need more than twenty minutes to have a good look around, take some photos, and read whatever plaques are on display. It's peaceful, occasionally a bit eerie depending on the weather, and genuinely interesting if you care about how Norfolk's landed families chose to commemorate themselves.

Historians and anyone with a taste for graveyards will find it worthwhile. Families with young children might find it a touch dull - there's not much to do beyond observe and ponder mortality. If you're staying at Deer's Mead or Top Farm, both just under three miles away, it makes an easy afternoon diversion. Moat Island Glamping, a touch further out, also works as a base.

Check ahead on access and opening times before you visit - these private monuments can be fussy about visitors. It's free to view from the outside at minimum, though you may need permission for closer inspection. Best combined with a broader wander around the Blickling area rather than as a solo destination.
