Blaco Pit (North)

The water at Blaco Pit catches the light differently depending on the time of day - some afternoons it's nearly silver, others a deep grey-green. This former quarry near Retford has evolved into a proper lake, the sort of place where you can walk the perimeter without rushing and actually think about things. It's quiet. Not aggressively quiet, just genuinely peaceful, which is rare enough these days.

What you're looking at is a flooded extraction site that's become surprisingly attractive to walkers and anglers. The paths around it are straightforward, nothing that demands hiking boots or specialist maps. Allow an hour or so if you're just having a look, longer if you've brought binoculars - the birdlife can be decent depending on the season. The banks aren't exactly dramatic, but that's rather the point. You won't find Instagram crowds here.

Families with young children might get restless after thirty minutes, if I'm honest. It's not a splash-about sort of place. Walkers and anyone after a bit of fresh air with minimal effort will find it worth the detour though, especially if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Hallcroft Fishery is practically on the doorstep at 3.7 miles away. It fits well into a broader exploration of the area around Retford, giving you something to do between the market town and longer countryside walks.

The place asks nothing of you and delivers exactly what it promises. No frills, no entry fee nonsense, just a lake and some time to spend.
