Blackpool Tower, Ballroom and Circus

The first time you walk up to Blackpool Tower, you get why Victorians went mad for it. This red-brick giant has been dominating the seafront since 1894, and it's still the sort of thing that makes you crane your neck just to see the top. Inside, the Ballroom is the real draw - proper ornate, all gilded plasterwork and sprung floors where you can actually feel the craftsmanship underfoot. Couples still waltz here, and there's something genuinely moving about watching people glide across a floor that's been hosting dancers for over a century.

The Circus, on the other hand, is pure spectacle - acrobats, aerial performers, the lot. It's kept the same theatrical feel since Victorian times, though the acts change regularly. You're looking at anything from two to four hours here if you want to catch a show and do the Tower properly, maybe grab a drink at one of the bars inside. Kids absolutely love the circus side of things, while anyone interested in Edwardian architecture and dance history will find themselves lingering in the Ballroom.

Admission isn't free, but it's reasonable value given what you get. Timing-wise, avoid summer school holidays if you hate crowds, though the weekday matinee shows tend to be quieter. If you're staying at Haven Cala Gran or Broadwater, both just up the coast, the Tower makes for an easy day trip. It's touristy as they come, but there's a reason this place has pulled visitors for 130 years.
