Black Wood

Walk into Black Wood and you're immediately swallowed by a proper working forest - dense, dark in places, genuinely atmospheric. It's not some manicured country estate with colour-coded trails; this is Lincolnshire doing woodland the serious way, with tall conifers creating deep shade and paths that feel like they actually lead somewhere rather than loop back to a car park after twenty minutes.

The trees tower overhead and flatten the light. You'll spot the occasional clearing where sunlight breaks through, which is when you notice the quietness - real quiet, not the pretend kind. It's the sort of place where kids either love the sense of adventure or get spooked by the gloom. Honest assessment: take torch-carrying eight-year-olds rather than toddlers who need constant reassurance.

How long to spend here depends entirely on your pace and mood. You could do a solid two-hour walk without trouble, or pop in for forty minutes if you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites. Station Farm is barely half a mile away, which means Black Wood works brilliantly as a morning walk before breakfast at the site. Wolds View and North Gulham are also within spitting distance, so you're never far from base.

Market Rasen is the nearest town for supplies, though you won't find visitor facilities actually in the wood itself. Come autumn and the colours shift everything - that's when it's properly worth the detour. Summer brings lush undergrowth and midges, so timing matters.
