Black Loch

The water at Black Loch sits dark and still, fringed with moorland that stretches endlessly toward the horizon. It's a proper Highland loch - the sort of place where you feel genuinely remote, even though Thurso is only a short drive south.

There's not much here by way of facilities or attractions. No cafe, no visitor centre, no gift shop trying to flog you tartan tat. What you get instead is raw landscape and the chance to stand quietly by the water without crowds. Walkers love it, especially those heading out on longer moorland treks across the Flow Country. Photographers come for the light on the water, particularly in the late afternoon when the sun swings round and catches the loch properly.

Bring binoculars if you're into birds - the open moorland and boggy ground attract species you won't see further south. Allow an hour if you're just popping by for a look and a wander round the shore. Double that if you're planning a proper walk into the wider landscape.

It's free, obviously, since there's nothing to pay for. Your nearest proper base is Little Croft Highlands - Campsite & Airigh, just 3.6 miles away, which makes this an easy half-day detour if you're camping in the area. Worth the visit if you're into that sort of stripped-back Highland scenery. Less worthwhile if you're after a buzzy, developed attraction. Come here for peace and weather-beaten beauty.
