About Black Craig
You'll find yourself among moorland and scattered Scots pine, with the landscape opening out as you climb. The summit sits at around 2,000 feet, high enough to feel like real achievement without needing ropes or previous experience. On a clear day you're looking across the Dee Valley towards Lochnagar and the Cairngorms - genuinely worth the slog up.
Walkers and hill-baggers get the most from this one. It's too straightforward to excite experienced mountaineers, but ideal if you want a proper walk without the exposed scrambling. Families with older kids who don't mind a grind will manage it fine. Bring decent boots though - the ground can be boggy in patches.
Stay based at either Ballater Caravan Park or Firbank Park, both just under five miles away, and you've got easy access to this and plenty of other Deeside walking. The area's strong for hill walks and river scenery. Aboyne itself is a small, functional village - you won't linger there for the shops, but it's got what you need.
Go in the dry season ideally. Scottish moorland in drizzle is honest work.
