Black Clump

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination - Black Clump sits on the outskirts of Retford and gives you exactly what it says on the tin: a clump of trees with decent paths running through it. The forest floor is soft underfoot, the canopy thick enough to feel like you've actually left town, and it's the kind of place where you can walk for twenty minutes and feel genuinely away from it all.

It works best for families who want a quick leg-stretch without the drive, or walkers taking a break between longer rambles across Nottinghamshire. There's nothing dramatic here - no viewpoint, no ruins, no tearoom - but that's rather the point. The woodland is peaceful, relatively quiet even at weekends, and free to explore. You're looking at anything from thirty minutes to an hour depending on how many of the paths you fancy tackling.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Hallcroft Fishery, Little Oak, or Olive Tree - it's a convenient option for blowing off steam without loading the kids back in the car. Worth combining with a proper walk somewhere bigger, but on its own it's decent filler rather than a highlight. The trees are lovely in autumn if you're visiting then, and dogs are clearly welcome judging by the muddy paw prints everywhere.
