Black Bourton Recreation Ground

The Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust runs this modest nature reserve just outside Witney, and it's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick loop. You're walking through meadows and alongside ditches where dragonflies are genuinely impressive in summer, and in spring the place comes alive with birds nesting. The reserve has been managed to bring back the sorts of wildflowers and insects you won't see in a mowed-to-death playing field - it's working land, in a way.

It's ideal for families with young kids who can manage a gentle stroll and won't need constant entertainment. Walkers doing the longer Oxfordshire routes sometimes drop in, and serious birdwatchers should catch it during migration periods. There's nothing dramatic here - no water features or viewpoints that'll make you gasp - but that's rather the point. The landscape is understated, which means you actually notice what's living in it.

Entry's free and you can visit anytime during daylight hours. Allow forty minutes to an hour to make sense of it without rushing. Midweek mornings are quieter, which helps if you're hoping to spot wildlife. If you're camping at Burford Caravan and Motorhome Club just four miles away, or The Real Campsite nearby, it's an easy morning outing before heading to bigger attractions. Not a destination in itself, but a worthwhile addition to a park holiday in the Witney area.
