The woods around Holford are thick and proper atmospheric, especially if you push into Black Ball Wood itself. It's the sort of place where the canopy gets dense enough that you lose track of time - tall trees, mossy undergrowth, and paths that feel genuinely isolated even though civilisation isn't far off.

What you're getting here is a straightforward woodland walk, nothing fancy. The appeal is just the peace of it - birdsong, the smell of damp earth, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why people bother with forests at all. It's free to access and you can spend anywhere from forty minutes to a couple of hours depending on which trails you fancy. Early morning or late afternoon is when you'll avoid the school holiday crowds.

This works brilliantly if you're camping at Moorhouse Campsite just two miles away - far closer than the other holiday parks in the area. Families with children old enough to enjoy a proper walk (say, eight upwards) will get something out of it, though there's no play equipment or visitor facilities, so manage expectations. If your kids need constant entertainment, it's not the answer.

It pairs well with Holford village itself, which has a few pubs and shops, and gives you access to the wider Quantock Hills walking country. The woods are genuinely worth an hour or so of your time if you're in the area, but don't plan your entire holiday around them. Think of it as a solid leg-stretch between bigger attractions rather than a destination in itself.
