Bishoper Plantation

The woodland around Bishoper Plantation near Malmesbury is proper walking territory - the kind of place where you can lose a solid couple of hours without thinking about it. It's not a manicured estate garden or anything; this is genuine forest with the sort of quiet you don't often find within striking distance of Wiltshire towns.

You get mixed woodland - plenty of mature trees creating decent shade, paths that wind through without being overly managed, and enough space to actually feel away from things. It's the sort of spot where dog walkers and serious hikers both get something out of a visit. Families with kids of walking age will manage fine here, though younger ones might find the terrain a bit much after the first mile or so.

Timing-wise, give yourself two to three hours if you're doing a proper circuit. Spring's excellent when the woodland floor's coming alive, but honestly any season works - autumn's gorgeous for the colour. There's no obvious admission charge that I'm aware of, though facilities information is thin on the ground, so come prepared.

It sits well within a park holiday based around Malmesbury. Both Malmesbury Glamping at Whychurch Farm and Burton Hill Caravan & Camping Park are within easy reach - you could easily base yourself at either spot and include this as a morning walk before heading into Malmesbury town itself for lunch. The forest feels remote enough that it makes for a proper break from site life, without requiring a huge drive.
