Birchy Copse

The woodland around Birchy Copse feels properly tucked away - the sort of place you stumble upon rather than deliberately hunt down. It's a modest patch of forest near Dorking, but if you're after a quiet walk without the crowds that swarm the bigger Sussex beauty spots, this works well enough.

You'll find mixed woodland here - deciduous trees mostly, decent canopy cover in summer, and the kind of quietness that makes you actually hear birds rather than just assume they're there somewhere. There are paths through it, though nothing spectacular or particularly challenging. The forest floor in autumn is satisfying underfoot, all leaf litter and the smell of proper woodland decay.

Walkers will get the most from this one, especially if you're the type who doesn't need dramatic views or challenging terrain - just space to clear your head. It's the sort of walk you'd do between other things rather than plan your day around. An hour is enough, really. Kids might find it a touch dull if they're expecting an adventure, though younger ones who like poking about under logs and searching for bugs will be content.
