Birchley Wood

The woodland around Birchley isn't going to stop you in your tracks, but it's a solid choice if you're based at one of the caravan parks near Rugby and fancy a proper walk without driving thirty minutes. Ancient oak and birch trees line the paths here, with enough greenery to feel properly away from it all, even though you're only a few miles from town.

It's the kind of place walkers will appreciate more than anyone else. The paths are decent enough, though nothing spectacular - expect muddy stretches in winter and plenty of low branches to duck under. You'll see the usual woodland birds and if you're lucky, a muntjac or two slipping between the trees. Children might find it interesting for an hour or so, particularly if you make it a treasure hunt situation, but it's not the sort of woodland with dramatic vistas or waterfalls to keep them entertained for a full afternoon.

Head here early morning or late afternoon when the light filters through properly and you'll have the place almost to yourself. It works brilliantly as a morning outing if you're staying at Eriba Glade or Meadow Field Luxury Glamping - pop in for an hour, clear your head, then crack on with the rest of your day. Admission appears to be free, and there's no time limit, so you can wander as long as you fancy. Mid-week visits beat weekends when local dog walkers descend. Fair warning though: it's woodland, not woodland spectacle. Go if you're in the area and need fresh air. Don't plan a trip around it.
