Birchen Shaw

You'll find yourself surrounded by towering conifers and ancient woodland the moment you step into Birchen Shaw, just a short drive inland from Bexhill-on-Sea. It's a proper forest walk rather than a manicured park - the kind of place where you can actually lose an afternoon without bumping into themed attractions or gift shops.

The trails wind through dense trees, and there's something restorative about the quiet. For walkers, it's genuinely worth the trip. The forest canopy is thick enough that even on warm days you're shaded properly, which matters if you're visiting in summer. The ground can get muddy after rain, so boots are the move rather than trainers.

This isn't a destination for thrill-seekers or people wanting to tick off Instagram moments. But if you're staying at Normans Bay Camping and Caravanning Club Site nearby and want to stretch your legs without driving far, it works well. Kids who like exploring will get more from it than those who need constant stimulation - you're not going to find play equipment or facilities here.

Allow a couple of hours for a decent ramble. There's no formal entrance fee that I'm aware of, and facilities are minimal, so come prepared with water and snacks. Go in autumn when the light filters through differently, or spring when the forest floor comes alive. It's the sort of place that reminds you why people choose woodland holidays in the first place.
