Birch Wood

The birch trees here are genuinely tall - proper woodland rather than a manicured country estate walk. Birch Wood sits just outside Banbury, and it's the sort of place you can lose an hour without realizing, following the paths through white-barked trunks and dappled light. The forest floor is soft underfoot, especially after rain, and there's enough space that you won't feel crowded even on weekends.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination with viewpoints or interpretive boards - it's simply a wood where you can think. Kids under eight might lose patience quickly unless they're the type to build dens and hunt for woodland creatures. Teenagers who enjoy a proper walk rather than a tourist trail will prefer it to some of the mown-grass alternatives nearby.

There's no entrance fee or formal opening hours that I could confirm, which means you can visit dawn or dusk if you fancy it. Allow two hours for a decent circuit, though you could easily do it in forty minutes if you're just after fresh air. The nearest ground-level parking is in Banbury itself, which isn't ideal.

If you're staying at Nightingales Rustic Camping or Fir Tree Campsite - both within five miles - this makes a proper alternative to the usual park walks. It's worth combining with a trip into Banbury town rather than treating it as a standalone afternoon. The wood does what it does well: it's a genuine escape, not a packaged experience.
