Binnilidh Mhor

The walk up Binnilidh Mhor isn't long, but it's proper steep in places - expect to feel your legs working. This peak sits just south of Fort Augustus, making it an ideal afternoon objective if you're based at one of the Loch Ness holiday parks nearby. The summit rewards you with solid views across the Great Glen, and on a clear day you can pick out Ben Nevis to the south.

It's a walker's mountain rather than a casual stroll. Allow three to four hours for the round trip depending on fitness, and pick decent weather - the exposed slopes can get claggy quickly. The terrain is rough underfoot with plenty of heather and bog, so proper boots are essential. You won't need technical kit, but it's not a path you can sleepwalk along either.

Families with strong walkers will manage it fine. Young children or anyone after a gentle afternoon ramble would be better off exploring the trails at Loch Ness Highland Resort or tackling something less demanding in the area. Solo walkers and peak baggers will get the most from it - there's something satisfying about standing on top knowing you've earned the view rather than driven halfway up.

The proximity to Fort Augustus makes logistics straightforward. Park near the trailhead, tackle the climb, and you're back in time for an early dinner at the town before heading back to your accommodation. Worth doing as part of a longer Fort Augustus break rather than as a standalone destination.
