Binnilidh Bheag

The walk up Binnilidh Bheag isn't long, but it packs a proper punch. This modest Highland peak sits just south of Fort Augustus, rising to 1,110 metres with views that genuinely justify the effort. You're looking out across the Great Glen, with Ben Nevis dominating the western horizon on clear days. The route itself is straightforward enough for anyone with reasonable fitness, though the final push gets steep and the ground can be boggy lower down.

Allow two to three hours for the round trip, depending on pace and how long you linger at the top. There's no marked path in the formal sense - you're navigating by map and compass or GPS, which actually adds to the appeal. Real walkers will appreciate the lack of crowds and the genuine sense of self-sufficiency required. Families with teenagers comfortable on rougher terrain will manage it fine; younger kids might find the scramble tedious.

Timing matters. Go early or midweek to avoid the bottlenecks that can happen on weekends. Weather changes fast up here, so check the forecast and bring layers. The proximity to Fort Augustus means you can combine it with exploring the Caledonian Canal or grabbing decent food afterwards without a long drive back to base.
