Binnean nan Gobhar

The walk up Binnean nan Gobhar delivers one of those rare Scottish summit experiences where the effort-to-reward ratio actually tips in your favour. Rising just over 700 metres above Loch Lomond's eastern shore, this peak rewards you with proper expansive views across the loch and back towards the Trossachs - no scrambling required, just a steady climb through mixed woodland that opens out as you gain height.

You're looking at a couple of hours up, same coming down, so allow three to four hours total if you're not a regular hill walker. The path is well-trodden and marked, though it can be boggy lower down after rain. Start early if you can. Spring and autumn are best - summer brings midges that'll drive you up the mountain faster than your fitness level dictates, and winter snow can make it properly treacherous without proper kit.

Families with older kids who don't mind a proper walk will find it manageable. Younger children might struggle with the sustained gradient. History types won't find much on the summit itself, but you're in Clan Campbell territory, and the loch views tell the story of Loch Lomond's importance to Highland life.

If you're staying at Milarrochy Bay or Inverbeg just down the road, this becomes an obvious day out. Free admission, obviously - it's a mountain. The nearest town is Glasgow, about 30 miles south, but you won't need it. Everything's at the trailhead.
