Bingley's Wood

The moment you step into Bingley's Wood, the noise of the main road vanishes. Ancient oaks tower overhead, their branches tangling into a canopy so thick you could swear it's permanently twilight down there. This is proper woodland - the kind where you actually feel like you've escaped, not just wandered into someone's manicured nature reserve.

It's a walker's playground, frankly. The paths meander through mature forest with enough variation to keep you interested for a good couple of hours, though plenty of people knock around for just half an hour if they're pressed for time. Families with older kids will find it decent - there's space to run about without losing them entirely, and the lack of crowds means you won't be dodging pushchairs. Younger children might find it a bit samey after forty minutes of "tree, tree, another tree".

No facilities to speak of, so come prepared. It's free to wander, which is the way these things ought to be. The wood's close enough to Northallerton if you need town supplies, but honestly, you want to come early and quiet. Summer weekends can draw a steady trickle of walkers from the nearby caravan parks - Pembroke's practically on your doorstep at just over a mile away.

Worth combining with Kiplin Country Park if you're staying in the area for a few days. Bingley's Wood does woodland properly. No frills, no faffing, just good honest forest.
