Bilton Evangelical Church

A red-brick Evangelical chapel sitting quietly on the edge of Rugby, Bilton Church isn't going to set your pulse racing. But if you're into Victorian religious architecture or you've got a soft spot for nonconformist meeting houses, it's worth a quick detour.

The building itself dates back to the 19th century and represents that particular strand of English Christianity that broke away from the established church - proper earnest, community-focused stuff. The brickwork is straightforward, honest even. Inside you'll find the sort of simple, functional interior these congregations favoured: no fancy decoration, no show. It's the antithesis of grand cathedral tourism.

Really, this is for two types of people. Religious heritage enthusiasts will appreciate the architectural detail and social history - these chapels tell you a lot about how ordinary Victorians organised their spiritual lives. Second, if you're cycling or walking through Rugby, it's a reasonable stop to stretch your legs and poke around a building that most visitors zoom straight past.
