Big Tuesdays - Fireworks

Every Tuesday night between May and October, Great Yarmouth's seafront erupts into colour and noise. Big Tuesdays is exactly what it sounds like - a proper fireworks display that's become something of a local institution. You'll find crowds gathering on the beach and promenade as darkness falls, families claiming spots with blankets and flasks while the anticipation builds.

The display itself runs for around twenty minutes and launches from a barge offshore. The finale is genuinely impressive - nothing too experimental or weird, just solid pyrotechnics that light up the beach and reflect off the North Sea. It's free to watch from anywhere along the seafront, which is the whole appeal.

Who gets the most from it? Families with young kids love it, though the noise can be intense for very small ones. Couples after a seaside evening out will find it atmospheric without requiring much planning. Local residents sometimes treat it as weekly entertainment rather than a special outing.

Timing-wise, you'll want to arrive at least an hour early during peak summer weeks to claim decent viewing space. Best vantage points are around the main promenade near the amusement arcades, though anywhere along the beach works fine. Bring a jumper - even in summer, the sea breeze turns cold once the sun drops.

If you're staying at Waxham Sands Holiday Park just down the coast, it's only five miles north, so easily done as an evening trip to Great Yarmouth. Worth checking the weather beforehand - grey skies don't kill the spectacle, but obviously clear nights are better.
