Big Mead Pond

There's a proper working pond on the outskirts of Shanklin that locals have relied on for centuries, and Big Mead Pond is exactly what its name suggests - a substantial body of water that feels genuinely rural despite being within spitting distance of the town. Walking out here, you get a real sense of how the Isle of Wight used to be before the seafront got built up. The pond itself is fringed with reeds and trees, and it's the kind of place where you might spot dragonflies in summer or watch ducks pottering about. It's free to visit and there's no faffing about with opening hours - you can wander the edges at any reasonable time.

This isn't a destination in itself, but it works beautifully as a half-hour detour if you're based in Shanklin or nearby. Families with younger kids will get a kick out of the wildlife spotting, and anyone staying at Sibbecks Farm Glamping just down the road has a lovely low-key walk on their doorstep. Bring binoculars and a camera if you're into that sort of thing - the light can be cracking across the water at golden hour.

If you're doing the whole Isle of Wight trail-and-park circuit, Big Mead works as a quieter counterpoint to busier attractions. It won't take long, but that's rather the point. Sometimes the best bits of a holiday are the ones where nothing much happens.
