The woodland at Big Covert spreads across decent acreage just outside Stroud, offering the sort of proper forest walk you'd want to escape into on a damp afternoon. It's not dramatic or theatrical - no waterfall reveals or dramatic cliff edges - but that's rather the point. Ancient trees, dappled light, the occasional muddy path that actually feels like a forest floor rather than a manicured trail.

Walkers will find this genuinely useful. The network of paths gives you options: thirty minutes if you're just stretching your legs, or a solid couple of hours if you want to properly lose yourself. Kids who don't mind getting their boots wet will enjoy it fine, though there's nothing specifically designed to hold a short attention span. The forest does most of the work for you - birds, undergrowth, the general sense of being away from things.

It's free access, which matters. You'll find it straightforward enough to navigate, though bringing a map isn't a bad idea. Winter walks are pleasant when the canopy thins out; spring and summer get busy with the green-ness of it all, but never uncomfortable.
