Big Belly Oak

The Big Belly Oak stands in a field near Pewsey like something from a fairy tale - except it's very much real and genuinely massive. This ancient tree is properly enormous, the kind of oak that makes you crane your neck and wonder how many centuries it's been doing its thing. The trunk is absolutely vast, gnarled and split in places, with a hollow belly that's earned it the name. You can walk right up to it, run your hands over the bark if you fancy it, and spend a good twenty minutes just circling the thing, taking in the sheer scale of it.

It's brilliant for anyone keen on natural history or just fancying a proper wander through the Wiltshire countryside. Families with kids do well here - there's something satisfying about standing next to something so ancient and enormous that you can't quite wrap your head around its age. The tree itself is free to visit and accessible most of the time, though you'll want to check the ground conditions after heavy rain because the approach can get muddy.

Allow half an hour if you're just paying your respects, longer if you're the type to photograph it from every angle and sit quietly for a bit. The spot works perfectly as a walking destination while staying at Totteridge Farm or Hillview Park - both are within easy reach - and it's the sort of place that rewards a slow morning rather than a rushed tick-box visit. Worth the detour if you're exploring the Vale of Pewsey anyway.
