Bewes Hills

The woodland at Bewes Hills stretches across proper moorland terrain, a genuine escape from the manicured gardens you'll find elsewhere in Northumberland. What you're looking at here is coniferous forest mixed with native broadleaf - nothing flashy, just good honest trees and walking paths that actually go somewhere.

The appeal is straightforward: if you want to move your legs and breathe in something that isn't seaside air, this delivers. You can walk for a couple of hours without seeing much other than forest floor and the occasional glimpse of sky through the canopy. That works brilliantly for families with kids who've got actual stamina, and for serious walkers after a quieter alternative to the Lake District crowds. Less useful if you're expecting sweeping vistas or a cafe halfway round.

Based near Derecroft, it's perfectly positioned for combining with Valley View Camping & Glamping, which sits just over 6 miles away and rates exceptionally well. You could do a morning walk here, lunch back at the site, then make the most of other Northumberland attractions in the afternoon.

Timing-wise, allow two to three hours depending on how much you potter about. There's no entrance fee mentioned anywhere - typical for forest walks in this region. Spring and early autumn are cracking times to visit, when the canopy isn't completely shutting out the light and the paths aren't a quagmire. Dead quiet midweek, which is either a bonus or a reason to avoid depending on your mood.
