Bewbush Water Gardens

The water gardens sit on the edge of Crawley like a proper refuge - all reed beds, shallow pools, and the sort of peaceful quiet you don't expect minutes from a busy town. It's a nature reserve that actually feels like one, not a manicured garden with a rope round it.

You're here to watch birds, mostly. Warblers, grebes, the occasional heron if you're lucky and patient. The paths wind between the ponds, and in spring the place hums with life - dragonflies skimming the water, frogs calling from the margins. Summer's good too, though it gets warm and the mosquitoes can be fierce.

Birders will get the most from it, but families with young kids who can manage a gentle forty-minute walk find it decent enough. There's not a great deal of infrastructure - no cafe, no facilities to speak of - so come prepared. Bring water and sensible shoes because the paths get boggy.

It's free to visit, which helps when you're basing yourself at Sands Farm Weekend Camping nearby. The gardens work well as a morning outing before heading to bigger attractions around the area. Don't expect dramatic vistas or rare species that'll make you gasp - this is understated Sussex nature done properly. If you want to actually see what's there rather than tick boxes, it's worth the detour.
