Beverley Minster

The moment you step inside Beverley Minster, you understand why this place has drawn people through its doors for nearly a thousand years. The sheer scale of it stops you dead - soaring Gothic arches, intricate stonework, and light flooding through stained glass that's genuinely breathtaking. This isn't a modest parish church; it's one of England's finest examples of perpendicular Gothic architecture, and standing in the nave, you feel the weight of that seriously.

Walking around, the detail catches you. The misericord carvings in the choir stalls are wonderfully quirky - everything from jousters to jesters - and the twin towers dominate the whole of Beverley town. If you're into medieval craftsmanship or church architecture, you could spend a good couple of hours here without running out of things to examine.

It works well for families too, though younger kids might fidget after thirty to forty minutes unless they're genuinely interested in the carvings and stonework. The town of Beverley itself is worth a morning's wander around - proper Georgian streets and decent independent shops - so it's easy to make a half-day of it.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks in the area - Butt Farm is closest at a mile and a half away - Beverley Minster is an obvious stop that justifies a trip into town. Admission details aren't always clear on first glance, but it's worth ringing ahead to check current opening hours and donations. Well worth the short drive from anywhere in East Yorkshire.
