Bethania Chapel

A small stone chapel standing alone in the Ceredigion countryside, Bethania is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's a working Welsh Independent chapel, built in the 19th century, with that particular quiet dignity you find in rural nonconformist churches - whitewashed walls, simple windows, the kind of stillness that makes you lower your voice without thinking about it.

There's not much to do here in the conventional sense. You're not paying entry fees or following a guided tour. What you get is the chance to step inside, look at the original furnishings, and sit for a moment in a space that's been doing the same job for over 150 years. History types will find it interesting; walkers passing through the area should absolutely pop in if they're nearby.

It's the sort of chapel that appeals most to people who actually appreciate Welsh religious architecture and rural heritage, rather than casual visitors looking for an hour's entertainment. That said, if you're based at Woodlands Holiday Park in Llanon, just four and a half miles away, or one of the other caravan parks scattered round here, adding Bethania to a country walk is entirely sensible. The surrounding landscape is proper lovely - rolling fields, quiet lanes, the sort of terrain that makes for decent rambling.

Go when the light's good, ideally late afternoon when the sun hits the chapel's south side. Check locally in Llanon for opening times, as these places can be unpredictable.
