Berwick Knoll

The walk up Berwick Knoll catches you out if you're not prepared. It looks modest from the road near Salisbury, but once you're committed to the path, those last fifty metres feel steeper than the map suggested. Worth the effort though - the summit gives you proper views across the Dorset downs, and on a clear day you can see why this modest peak mattered to people centuries ago.

It's an Iron Age hill fort, which means there's actual history embedded in the slopes - ramparts and ditches that still shape the terrain beneath your feet. You won't find visitor facilities or interpretation boards, which is either brilliant or frustrating depending on your mood. Walkers absolutely get the most from this one. Families with young kids might find the final push a bit of a grind, but older children who can manage a steady climb will enjoy the sense of achievement.

Allow ninety minutes return from the nearest car park - longer if you're taking photographs or just soaking in the quiet. There's no admission fee because there's nothing formally managed here; it's just a hill you can walk up. Spring and autumn are lovely, though it gets muddy after rain and the exposed summit catches the wind properly in winter.

If you're based at Chalke Valley Camping or Gold Hill Glamping, both within five miles, this makes a solid morning or afternoon expedition without needing to travel far. Combine it with a walk along the valley itself and you've got a proper day sorted.
