Bertha Loch

A small loch tucked into the Perthshire landscape, Bertha Loch sits quietly a few miles south of Perth and draws folk after a gentle afternoon walk rather than a major expedition. The water is dark and reflective, fringed with woodland that gives it an intimate feel - you're not staring at some vast reservoir, but something altogether cosier. The footpath around the loch is manageable for most abilities, taking about 45 minutes to an hour at a proper pace, and it's the kind of spot where you might see a cormorant diving or catch sight of red squirrels in the trees if you're lucky enough.

This works best for walkers after something low-key and families wanting a break from driving between bigger attractions. If you're staying at Newmill Farm or Luxury Hideaways - both cracking parks within a few miles - it's an easy half-day addition to your itinerary. Don't come expecting dramatic vistas or facilities; there aren't any to speak of. What you get instead is quietness, which in Perthshire, where you're spoilt for choice with Loch Earn, Loch Tay and the rest nearby, is actually quite valuable. Park near the loch entrance and bring a packed lunch if you fancy sitting by the water. The walk itself is flat enough for pushchairs, though the surface can be muddy after rain. Worth stopping for if you're in the area, but don't plan an entire day around it.
