Bermuda Lake

A glacial relic sits quietly on the Leicestershire-Warwickshire border near Atherstone, formed thousands of years ago when ice sheets retreated and left behind a depression that filled with water. Bermuda Lake is exactly what its name suggests - a proper lake, roughly circular, ringed by trees and reed beds that shift colour with the seasons. You won't find a visitor centre or facilities here; it's simply a body of water that's been part of the local landscape long enough that locals barely notice it anymore. The main draw is walking. There's a decent path around the perimeter - take an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type who stops to peer at waterfowl. Bring binoculars if you're into birds; the reed beds attract plenty. The lake itself is unremarkable in the way that many English lakes are, which is to say calming rather than dramatic. It's genuinely free to access, though there's nowhere to buy a coffee, so plan accordingly. Winter's actually the best time, when the water's higher and the bare trees let you see across properly. In summer the vegetation gets thick and views get claustrophobic. If you're staying at 5 Ways Lakes or Atherstone Stables - both solid caravan parks nearby - Bermuda Lake makes a decent half-hour detour on a drive day. Don't build a day around it. But if you're already in the area and fancy a quiet walk with minimal crowds and zero commercial pressure, it delivers.
