Benthall Edge Picnic Site

The view from Benthall Edge stops you mid-sandwich. You're perched above the Ironbridge Gorge with the whole industrial landscape spreading out below - the River Severn winding through it all, those iconic bridges visible if you know where to look, and Coalbrookdale huddled in the valley like something from a Lowry painting. It's a proper vantage point rather than a manicured spot with facilities.

As picnic sites go, this one appeals to walkers and history buffs more than families after an afternoon of play. The views are the draw - the gorge has genuine drama, especially if you're interested in the industrial heritage that built Britain. You're literally eating lunch above one of the world's most important coalfields. Spend twenty minutes here and you'll understand why.

If you're camping at Irongorge Camping just down the road, this is an easy detour. Same goes for the other parks within a couple of miles - Sytche Caravan & Camping Park makes for a natural loop walk. The site itself is free, obviously, and open whenever daylight is, though I'd avoid scrambling up here in the wet.

The practical bit: allow an hour if you want to actually sit and take it in rather than snap a photo and leave. Park in Coalbrookdale and walk up - the gradient's not savage. Best visited in autumn when the light sits low across the gorge. Winter works too if you don't mind the wind.
