Ben Vrackie

The walk up Ben Vrackie from Pitlochry is one of those Scottish outings that feels properly achievable without needing mountaineering skills. You're looking at roughly 2,400 feet of climbing, which sounds more dramatic than it actually is - most people knock it out in under three hours return, making it ideal if you've got a caravan parked at Faskally Woods or one of the nearby holiday parks and fancy a half-day outing.

The path itself is well-trodden and fairly straightforward, starting from the town and winding through woodland before opening up to moorland. On a clear day, the views across Perthshire are genuinely worth the graft - you can see right across to the Cairngorms. On a grey one, you're basically walking through cloud, which is fine if you're here for the exercise rather than the vista.

Families with decent-sized legs will manage this without complaint, though younger children might find the final push tedious. It's the sort of walk where your calves remember you've made an effort, but your sense of achievement afterwards is real. The summit cairn is modest, but standing there you get why people bother.

There's no charge, no facilities at the top beyond what you've carried, and you can do this in any season - though winter requires proper boots and an honest assessment of the conditions. Start early if the weather looks decent. If you're staying at River Tilt Park or Blair Castle Caravan Park, you're well-positioned to combine this with exploring the Pass of Killiecrankie or Pitlochry's attractions.
