Ben Our

The walk up Ben Our takes about two hours from Lochearnhead, and it's one of those hills that doesn't look like much from the car park but rewards you properly once you're up there. The path climbs through woodland at first, then opens out onto moorland with views across Loch Earn that get better the higher you go. On a clear day you can see right down the valley towards the Trossachs.

It's a solid day out for walkers who want something achievable without needing to be a mountaineer. The terrain is straightforward enough - boggy in places, a bit steep towards the top, but nothing technical. Families with kids aged ten and up would manage it fine if they're used to hills. The descent takes about the same time coming down, so allow four hours total with a proper stop at the summit.

This works brilliantly as part of a wider Perthshire walking holiday. Stay at Balquhidder Braes Holiday Park just 2.5 miles away, and you've got Ben Our on your doorstep along with plenty of other Trossachs walks nearby. Loch Earn Leisure Park is slightly further out at 4.4 miles if you want more facilities. The village of Lochearnhead itself is tiny - a shop, a couple of places to eat - so stock up before heading out.

Bring proper boots and waterproofs even if the forecast looks promising. The weather changes fast up there, and the ground gets sodden quickly. Spring through autumn is your best bet, though winter ascents are possible if you know what you're doing.
