Ben Ever

Ben Ever rises 652 metres above the Clackmannan landscape, and on a clear day you can see all the way to the Forth bridges. The walk takes roughly two hours up, depending on fitness and weather - it's not brutal, but it's steep enough that you'll feel it in your thighs on the way down.

You're rewarded with proper 360-degree views across the Lowlands. The peak itself is tidy, with a trig point and enough space to stop for a sandwich without clambering over anyone. On quieter days you might have the place to yourself, which beats the overcrowded Munros hands down.

History buffs will appreciate that this area sits in the heart of Clackmannan's old coal and brewing country - you can see remnants of that industrial heritage from the ridge. It's worth the walk if you're after a genuine Lowland perspective rather than the more famous Highland peaks.

The climb works well as a half-day outing from Witches Craig Caravan & Camping Park, just five miles away near Clackmannan. Park up there, tackle Ben Ever in the morning, and you've still got the afternoon free. Go when the midges aren't biting - spring or late autumn - and bring waterproofs even if the forecast looks promising. Scottish weather changes faster than you'd think.
