Belton House Maze

The maze at Belton House sits within the grounds of this grand 17th-century estate just outside Grantham, and it's one of those attractions that looks deceptively simple on the map but actually holds your attention for longer than you'd think. The hedge maze itself isn't enormous, but it's tall enough that you genuinely lose your bearings once you're in it, which is precisely the point.

This works best for families with children old enough to navigate without needing carrying - roughly seven or eight and up. You're looking at maybe 20 to 30 minutes to crack it properly, depending on whether you take a wrong turn or two (most people do). Adults on their own or as couples find it a bit underwhelming on solo merit, but as part of a broader wander around the Belton House grounds, it slots in nicely. The estate itself is substantial, with decent gardens and woodland walks, so you could easily spend two to three hours here if the house is open to tour.

It's the kind of thing that tips from "fine" into "genuinely worth it" if you're already staying nearby at Wagtail Country Park, which is only 2.5 miles away. Combining a morning at the maze with an afternoon exploring the wider estate makes for a solid day out. Check ahead for opening times and entry fees - these tend to vary seasonally - but it rarely requires advance booking. Go midweek if you can; weekends pull in school groups and the novelty wears off quickly when you're queuing behind thirty other families.
