Belmont Green

Belmont Green is a proper woodland escape just outside Burton-on-Trent, the kind of place locals know well but tourists often miss. You're looking at dense forest with decent walking trails that wind through mature trees and undergrowth - it's genuinely peaceful, which counts for a lot in the Midlands. The main appeal is straightforward: shade, quiet paths, and enough woodland to feel properly away from the town without needing a full day trip.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not dramatic or challenging - think easy to moderate trails rather than anything that demands serious boots - but it's well suited to families with kids who can manage a mile or two without complaining. The forest floor is damp in places after rain, so watch your footing, but it's navigable year-round. Allow an hour to ninety minutes if you're taking it slowly and stopping to let children explore.

Timing-wise, spring and early summer are lovely when the canopy fills in, though it's usable any season. The main limitation is that there's not a huge amount here beyond walking - no visitor facilities that I can see, no café, no formal attractions within the wood itself. That's not necessarily bad; sometimes you just want trees.
